Most of those who know Dahl think of his amazing children's books -- but I now think of him for his very first story "A Piece of Cake" which is the reason he became a writer in the first place. It is an account of his time in the RAF, very very early in the war, flying a vintage WWI bi-plane against German Messerschmidts over North Africa. You will think differently of the all-pervasive magical quality of his childrens' stories then.
